Clarification for 7-9th Grade GASA Soccer

This was emailed to many earlier from James Petrik

This information is relevant only to potential players who are also participating in track.

In an earlier e-mail, I indicated that I did not think there would be significant conflicts between track meets and GASA league soccer games. While this is largely true for the Middle School, the High School meet schedule does point to a number of game days on which there would be track meets. I say this is "largely true" of the middle school as there is one Saturday (4/25) on which there is a track meet at 4:30 in Nelsonville. Though we should be able to schedule the game so that your child could make it to the track meet, he/she would, of course, be participating in a track meet after playing a soccer game. With respect to the high school, there are, by my count, at least four days on which a track meet would directly conflict with a soccer game. Consequently, what I'd like to emphasize is the following: if you're child is participating in track, please be sure to compare the track and soccer schedules before signing up for GASA soccer. If you have already sent in your registration form and payment but now believe that it is impossible to do both, we will, of course, be happy to return your payment. Just let me know.

I apologize for the misleading nature of my earlier e-mail.

Adult Indoor Soccer at the Ping Center

The Ohio University’s Division of Intramural Sports is organizing a 5 v. 5 adult (ages 16 and up) co-ed indoor soccer league. The league will run on the following Saturday mornings: 1/31, 2/14, 2/21, 2/28, 3/7 and 3/14. (There will be no games on February 7th due to the Ping Center’s Rec Fest. In the unlikely event that a game or games are canceled due to a snow emergency, no attempt will be made to make-up the lost game/s.) Each team will play a total of six games. Games will be played at Ohio University’s Ping Center.

The captains’ meeting is at 8 p.m. on Monday, January 26th in the conference room at the Athens Community Center. The registration fee is $200 per team, with a minimum roster size of 8. (While there is no maximum roster size stipulated by the league, captains should be mindful of the fact that games are composed of fifteen minute halves; so, if a team grows too large, playing time might be very limited.) All teams must have a captain or representative attend the captains’ meeting. To register a team at the captains’ meeting, captains must come prepared to remit their team’s full registration fee in either cash or check. Please make checks payable to OUSOA.

Participants who are not members of the Ping Center will need to either become regular paying members of the Ping Center or purchase a book of six admission tickets for $25. (Admission to Ping is NOT included in the league registration fee.) These tickets will afford access to the Ping Center, but only to the indoor soccer area and during the hours of the league. The tickets can be purchased on the day of the first game. If you are unable to make the first game, please arrange to purchase your packet of tickets by contacting Nick Brigati <brigati@ohio.edu>.

There will be five game slots on Saturday mornings: 9:30, 10:15, 11:00, 11:45 and 12:30. These slots will be divided between: 1) a competitive division and 2) a recreational division. The competitive division is for teams composed largely of more serious soccer players, with experience and fresh legs. The recreational division is for teams where a substantial portion (at least half) are either a) novices to the sport or b) individuals for whom running at top speed is a distant memory. If you plan to attend the captains’ meeting to register a team, it would facilitate planning were you to notify me in advance and let me know whether your team would be competitive or recreational.

If you are interested in playing but don’t know any coaches organizing a team, you can e-mail me at <petrik@ohio.edu> and let me know the division (competitive or recreational) in which you’re interested. I’ll do my best to connect you with a team in need of players. If you’re attempting to put together a team but need a few players to round out your roster, please send me an e-mail indicating a) the number of players you need and b) your team’s division.

Pick-up soccer update

Pick-up soccer at WalMart fields:

  • Monday Nov. 10, 4:30 PM
  • Thursday Nov. 13, 4:30 PM
  • Sunday Nov. 16, 3:00 PM
  • Wednesday Nov. 19, 4:30 PM

and if this works we will continue on Sundays and Wednesdays at the times above.

Ron is anxious to get back to the library fields, so if other people prefer that they can discuss. I prefer WalMart fields, partly because all our pop-up goals are going to be used for middle school indoor and it will be hard to keep getting them to all the games.

We can discuss times and days if these don't seem to work. There has been general agreement that Sunday afternoons is good for people, and there has been hope that one weekday would still work for enough people to make it worthwhile.

I won't be at Thursday's or Sunday's games but I will be on e-mail so if anyone needs announcements sent out to the list just let me know.

Lisa

PS John can you post? Thanks!
